Character Profile - Hikaru

Description

This is the only piece of art I currently have scanned out of my character profile series for the comic book I'm currently working on. The character's name is Roukishi Hikaru (a.k.a. Caine) - and he's one of the main supporting characters in the comic.

Being based on myself, he's a lot of fun to draw, and leads to a lot of interesting changes in my own physical appearance. (I actually grew a beard, cut/dyed my hair and got a tattoo all due to thinking 'damn, this is cool!' when doodling something new on a character page). The character's name is even a direct translation from my own (from English to Japanese - You wouldn't believe how much searching I had to do to figure out an equivalent last name to 'Rideout')

The letter in the background is "Hikaru" (Lit. Trans. - Light), the kanji for his name.

The picture was originally done on 9x12 Borden & Riley art paper, using a speedball spoon nib and india ink (I've since started using the G-pen instead of the spoon). The "coloring" was done primarily in Corel Painter, with some touch-ups in Photoshop.

Cool. Kinda shows that the sword is more than just a sharp piece of metal.

Interestingly, in my country there was a great tradition of 'white weapons', but we quickly evolved from typical european sword to special kind of sabre - it used aerodynamics to achieve quick turns while keeping high speed - you could attack from two opposite directions in one move. Also the technology was quite interesting - it was built from bunch of little sheets of metal, put together using hammer and high temperature. Completely different technique, but like in japanese swords, it had multiple layers of hard and soft metal. But there was one extra trick - part of blade's profile was hollow, yet it was strong enough to cut off iron door handle.

That weapon was used to fight off invasions coming from Asia (the Mongols & Ottoman empire).

Heh. I got into historic mood... :) sorry.
